The Leitz 5cm f2 Summitar is a manual focus, standard focal length lens with the M39 screwmount. Introduced in 1939, the Summitar replaced Leica's first 5cm f2 Summar lens. The Summitar had a larger front optic for less mechanical vignetting and employed an advanced 7 elements in 4 groups optical design, making it one of the best 50mm f2 lenses of its day. When not in use, the lens barrel collapses into the mount and body of the camera, slimming down the camera profile for easy carrying. Early versions of this lens have uncoated optics while post-WWII copies have single-coated optics. Also earlier versions of the Summitar employ a 10-bladed aperture design that was changed to a more complex 6-bladed design in 1950. This lens was produced until 1953 when it was replaced by the Summicron 5cm f2.
This lens has an M39 thread mount and is appropriate for early Leica rangefinder cameras such as the Leica II and Leica III. It also works with Canon and Voigtlander rangefinder cameras that accept M39 lenses.
